Student Due in Court for Airline Box-Cutter Hearing Mon October 20, 2003 12:22 PM ET BALTIMORE (Reuters) - A college student believed responsible for placing box cutters and other suspicious items on two Southwest Airlines jets will appear in federal court in Baltimore on Monday afternoon, federal officials said. Federal officials said on Monday a 20-year-old college student will appear in court at 3 p.m. EDT in connection with an FBI probe into how box cutters, bleach, matches and modeling clay turned up on two Boeing 737 jets in Houston and New Orleans on Thursday. Nathaniel Heatwole, a junior at Guilford College in North Carolina, was identified by a North Carolina newspaper as the central figure in the investigation. The U.S. District Court clerk's office said there were no details yet available about Heatwole's court appearance but that updates would be available as new information came to light. The U.S. Attorney's Office for Maryland had no comment. The Transportation Security Administration has said it linked an e-mail received last month dealing with aviation security to the same individual. No charges have been filed. The discovery of the forbidden items prompted the government to order airlines to search the entire U.S. commercial fleet of nearly 6,000 passenger planes. Box cutters were used as weapons by the Sept. 11 hijackers and have since been banned as carry-on items. Roger EWROPS
