You are perfectly correct. UA and QF are the only two airlines who fly
direct US-AUS these days, QF and UA from LAX and UA from SFO. I have no
experience of UA but naturally I'd recommend QF. Email me privately
Dennis and I can give you an idea of best availability times. Then
maybe Matthew can give you a cheapy!
