If you are going to be travelling Y class, Id recommend QF as option 1. Only ones flying that route who have monitors in each seat - big plus :-) Also try Air Pacific via NAN. Nadi would make a nice stopover enroute - the route is quite direct and they use 744's also with monitors. NZ and UA also fly non stop USA-SYD. NZ and QF have really nice food and much nicer FA's. UA's can be a little 'mature' and grumpy!! If you dont need to fly direct then NZ can get you to Australia via some really interesting routings on 763's eg LAX-PPT-RAR-AKL-SYD Just my throughts from doing it a couple of times a year!
