(NWAC.O) said on Wednesday it would reduce capacity at its Memphis, Tennessee, hub by 16 percent in January as the industry continues to battle weak demand. The No. 4 U.S. carrier's new Memphis schedule will total 198 daily flights starting on Jan. 6, compared with 242 flights currently. The change will reduce Northwest's systemwide capacity by about 1.6 percent, the company said. Minneapolis-based Northwest said it will maintain service to all 78 cities currently served from Memphis, its third largest domestic hub. Its other U.S. hubs are in Detroit and Minneapolis/St. Paul. ``The airline industry continues to experience financial challenges,'' said Tim Griffin, executive vice president of marketing and distribution. ``These challenges require us to continually examine every aspect of our business, including flight schedules, in an effort to improve our performance.'' Northwest, based in Eagan, Minnesota, said the restructured flight schedule would be published in computer reservations systems on Saturday. http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/business/business-airlines-northwest.html?ex=1065412730&ei=1&en=0755f78b7d8ad6ea --------------------------------- Get Home Delivery of The New York Times Newspaper.
