Total cost of the planes ordered by the Chinese local carrier is about $410 million at list prices, according to a news release, but airlines often negotiate discounts. None of the orders reflect deferred or canceled orders by other airlines, spokesman Bob Saling said in a telephone interview. "These are brand new orders," Saling said. Three of the orders are for delivery in the first half of next year and the other two are for the spring of 2005. Shanghai's fleet now includes 11 new generation 737s, seven 757-200s and five 767-300s for use on 54 routes within China and five to other countries and areas in Asia. The two-year dry spell in orders for the two-engine 757 has led to conce= rn for the future of the production line in Renton. In July, Continental Airlines said it was negotiating with Boeing over t= he "terms of delivery" of 11 757s the U.S. carrier had ordered for delivery in 2004 and 2005. At that point the backlog of 757s was down to 18, the lowest ever. Neither Continental nor Boeing would say what the negotiations covered, but terms can include pricing and delivery dates. Boeing has sold more than 1,000 757s since production began in 1983.
