RPT-Judge won't dismiss Sept. 11 cases versus airlines = = = = Tuesday September 9, 12:17 PM EDT = NEW YORK, Sept 9 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Tuesday refused to dismis= s Sept. 11th litigation brought against airlines, aircraft makers and the= operators of the World Trade Center by people injured and the families o= f those killed in the hijacked airliner attacks two years ago. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein allows the litigation= to proceed against the American Airlines unit of AMR Corp. (AMR), UAL Co= rp.'s (UALAQ) United Airlines, aircraft maker Boeing Co. (BA) and other d= efendants including the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Wor= ld Trade Center Properties. The ruling is being widely watched by families who must choose whether to= join the litigation or seek payment from a national compensation fund. = The airlines argued they should not be held liable because the unpreceden= ted attacks were unforeseeable and they had followed safety measures requ= ired by the federal government. The litigation before Hellerstein was brought by 70 of the injured and re= presentatives of those who died and by 10 entities that suffered property= damage. More than 3,000 people were killed in the hijacked airline attac= ks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and in an air crash in rural Pe= nnsylvania. = =A92003 Reuters Limited. = Roger EWROPS
