Delivery Airline ABX, Union Reach Deal

August 8, 2003

WILMINGTON, Ohio (AP) -- The union for flight crews of ABX
Air Inc. said it reached a tentative contract with the
overnight-delivery airline company, averting a strike after
its members worked for two years without a contract.

The five-year pact covering 800 crew members comes as
delivery company DHL attempts to buy the ground delivery
operations of ABX Air's parent company, Seattle-based
Airborne Inc., for $1.05 billion

``It gives us the scope protection we need in the event of
a partial or a total sale of the airline,'' Dan Graves,
secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 1224, said Thursday.

The agreement also provides signing bonus retroactive to
July 2001 and pay raises of 4, 2 and 2.5 percent over the
next three years.

Joe Hete, ABX Air's president and chief executive, said the
agreement shows the company's commitment to it pilots,
co-pilots and flight engineers.

The union was unable to convince the company to guarantee
cargo levels handled in Wilmington, Graves said. That would
have ensured jobs were needed there, he said.

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, of Dayton, who helped push the
company to come to an agreement, said he is still concerned
about the 5,700 nonunion employees in Wilmington.

ABX Air has said it will not layoff workers in Wilmington,
but may transfer workers there to another hub in Covington,
Ky.
