AA used the 747SPs for DFW-Tokyo, and then replaced them with MD-11s once they
were delivered. DFW-Tokyo is certainly on the long side, and the SP's range came
in handy. A 744 could also have done it, of course, but with a much greater
capacity. AA has generally preferred adding frequency rather than bigger
aircraft, if traffic on a route justifies it. AA did in fact negotiate for 744s
at around that time, planning to use them on ORD-Tokyo, where the additional
capacity would have been useful, and necessary given constraints in getting
slots at NRT. But they didn't get the route rights, and so never got the
aircraft. IIRC, they had been talking to Canadian about taking over some of
theirs. AA at the time had an alliance with Canadian.
