Japan Airlines System Corp. said lingering damage from the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks also contributed to a 46 percent decrease in international passengers to 1.9 million for the three months ended June 30, from 3.5 million the same period a year ago. Japan Airlines System is a holding company set up in October last year by Japan Airlines and Japan Air System, which are set to complete their merger on April 1, 2004. Official comparative numbers for profits and sales weren't available because this was the first time either carrier announced quarterly earnings, spokesman Geoffrey Tudor said. Sales totaled 398.8 billion yen ($3.3 billion) during the period, the company said in a statement. The company added that the results are in line with the forecasts it announced in May. Domestic passenger traffic rose 2 percent to 11.2 million people during the first quarter, up from 10.9 million in the year-ago period. International cargo traffic fell 5 percent, partly because of reductions following the outbreak of the SARS disease. On Thursday, domestic rival All Nippon Airways Co. reported a 18.3 billion yen ($152 million) group net loss in for the April-June period on a slumping Japanese economy and decreased air travel due to the war in Iraq and SARS. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/business/AP-Earns-Japan-Airlines.html?ex=1060745734&ei=1&en=63bdcdcea44bed22 --------------------------------- Get Home Delivery of The New York Times Newspaper.
