I don't think it's serious this time but BA actually did do something similar back in the late 80s. In order to kick start the summer holiday season they gave away 50,000 seats over their entire network for departure on one specific day. People had to apply in writing and BA received something like 5.5 million letters. They still only had an average system wide seat factor of 90% for that day.
