The U.S. didn't want Air Canada to fly to Beirut due to security
concerns but they have no problem with service to Baghdad?

U.S. gives OK on Iraq air service to 3 airlines

WASHINGTON (AP) =97 The government on Friday gave initial permission to=
three=20 airlines to begin scheduled flights between the United States
and Iraq,=20 saying air service can help reconstruct the war-torn
country. The airlines= =20 =97 World Airways, Northwest Airlines and
cargo carrier Kalitta Air =97= still=20 need approvals from several
government agencies. The Transportation=20 Security Administration, for
example, must make sure that security is=20 adequate at Iraqi airports.
Baghdad International Airport has yet to open=20 for scheduled service.
Last month, transportation officials lifted a ban on= =20 air service
between the two countries after nearly 13 years. As part of the= =20
1990 economic sanctions against Iraq, the Transportation Department
banned= =20 commercial flights that stopped in Iraq and barred
Iraqi-registered=20 aircraft from flying to or from the United States.
Transportation officials= =20 granted the right to fly between any point
in the United States and any=20 point in Iraq to two of the airlines:
Northwest, the fourth biggest U.S.=20 airline, and Kalitta Air, an
Ypsilanti, Mich.-based freight carrier. World= =20 Airways will be able
to carry people or cargo between Washington's Dulles=20 International
Airport and Baghdad via Geneva, Switzerland. World, a=20 Peachtree City,
Ga., airline, carries pilgrims to the Islamic Holy Land.
