Judge sentences former screener for false report at Reno airport

RENO, Nev. (AP) =97 A former airport screener who concocted a story about a=
=20
security breach to cover up her drinking on the job was sentenced to two=20
years of probation Thursday. U.S. District Court Judge David Hagen=20
sentenced Cheryl Shears to probation and ordered her to pay a $100 fee to=20
cover court costs after she pleaded guilty to making a false official=20
statement. On Nov. 16, 2001, officials shut down half of the Reno-Tahoe=20
International Airport after Shears claimed she confiscated a 3-inch knife=20
from a man who then took it back and threatened her with a gun. The closure=
=20
caused a dozen flights to be delayed and at least 300 travelers to=20
evacuate. Shears first told investigators she got a double vodka at a bar=20
before reporting the incident because she was frightened, but then admitted=
=20
making up the story to cover up her drinking, federal officials said.=20
Shears was an employee of a company hired by Southwest Airlines to conduct=
=20
pre-boarding searches of passengers and their carry-on luggage
