However, isn't that always the case?  What about Portland, OR (PDX) and
Portland, ME (PWM) or even worse San Jose, CA (SJC) and San Jose, CR
(SJO).

When I was in college in Maine and my parents lived in Oregon I would
just confuse the hell out of them when I would check in in Portland on
an e-ticket going to Portland.

In addition to the earlier good reasons, as I recall, there was at the
time concern DIA Denver International Airport would be confused with IAD
Dulles International Airport and bags and pax would be sent to the wrong
place
