Pittsburgh airport considering fee hike to keep US Airways

PITTSBURGH (AP) =97 Travelers at Pittsburgh International Airport may be=20
asked to pay a higher passenger fee to help pay for improvements designed=20
to keep US Airways at the airport. The Allegheny County Airport Authority=20
is considering hiking the $3 fee it charges each passenger to $4.50 to=20
offset improvements at the airport, requested by US Airways' to keep its=20
hub there. The Federal Aviation Administration also would have to approve=20
the hike, said Kent George, the airport's executive director. The airport=20
collects about $24 million in passenger fees a year. The hike would garner=
=20
another $12 million. The Arlington, Va.-based airline is seeking $155=20
million in airport improvements or it may not base its new MidAtlantic=20
Airways regional jet subsidiary in Pittsburgh. Airport officials have=20
selected about $70 million among the improvements US Airways wants that=20
could be used by other airlines should US Airways leave. They include gates=
=20
that can accommodate smaller regional jets, a training center and a hangar=
=20
for the smaller airplanes.
