Some ALPA contracts are tied to "industry standards". There are many flavors of this, but the simple explanation is that the pay rate of a new airplane to the fleet is based on a competitor's pay rate plus or minus a percentage. If the 777 came into the airline's fleet some years after the MD-11, the pay rate on the 777 would probably be higher at other carriers due to the wage inflation that would have gone on in the intervening years. The opposite will be true during these times. Wages are currently falling, so you may see some interesting pay rate contradictions in the future. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matthew Montano" <mmontano@xxxxxxxxx> To: <AIRLINE@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, May 08, 2003 6:55 PM Subject: Re: Big planes vs. little ones > 'cause there is a growing fleet of 777s and a shrinking MD-11 fleet? > > Supply and demand (plus the extra wonderful affects in the airline > industry) working it's wonders I guess. > > Matthew > > On Thursday, May 8, 2003, at 03:22 PM, Alireza Alivandivafa wrote: > > > Why would a 777 pilot make more than the MD-11 pilot?
