My guess would still deal with the wind.  An IFR pilot can correct me on
this if I'm wrong - I believe an IFR flight needs enough onboard to hold at
its destination airport (for 30 minutes? 45?) then fly to it's alternate.
If the winds were strong enough, landing at DLH would have been the right
thing to do, even if it was fairly close.

Also, perhaps NW doesn't take delivery of its aircraft at MSP or DTW.
Maybe, for tax purposes, it takes delivery in a more tax-friendly state.  I
know Boeing often delivers aircraft in YVR instead of BFI (Seattle - Boeing
Field) because of taxes.

It could also be that NW completes finishing its aircraft at an airport
other than one of its hubs.
