To further elaborate on David's observations, I would like to note that the economics of the route must have been particularly poor, considering they were flying the MD11, and could have downgauged to a 767, but dropped the route all together. AZ had even tried MXPSFO for a short time during the boomyears of 99/2000, but dropped it quickly after 9/11, and as I recall LAX followed shortly after.
