Air Canada announces details of staff cuts

   (05-05) 17:40 PDT TORONTO (AP) --
Air Canada said Monday it will cut 400 management and nonunion workers
this week as it restructures under bankruptcy protection.
In addition, another 400 workers will be notified in the next two months
that they also will lose their jobs, Air Canada spokeswoman Laura Cooke
said.
The job cuts are part of a 20 percent staffing reduction announced on
March 20, shortly before the airline filed for bankruptcy protection from
its creditors.
Since then, Air Canada has suffered further financial setbacks due to the
SARS outbreak in Toronto.
Air Canada also has asked union leaders to approve 10 percent wage cuts
for 60 days while negotiations on a more permanent solution continue.
Air Canada is the country's dominant airline.
