Rehabilitation Of Runway 18/36 at Winnipeg International Airport

WINNIPEG, MB, April 29 /CNW/ - Winnipeg Airports Authority has commenced
one of its largest airfield construction projects with the rehabilitation of
Runway 18/36. Now underway at Winnipeg International Airport, the $9.5 million
project is a positive step in assuring appropriate facilities which will
assure future air services.
Working with local partner, UMA/Stantec, engineering assessments
identified the runway as nearing the end of its economic life. Incorporating
new technology lighting systems, the project will benefit all users. The
project will assist further community development through the employment of
approximately 125 local construction workers during the project period.
Manitoba-based company, Nelson River Construction, has been awarded the
contract for construction.
Barry Rempel, President & CEO, Winnipeg Airports Authority said, "This
project is part of our ongoing commitment to providing services of value to
our community and is key in providing the necessary 24 hour air services
access which directly benefits current and future growth opportunities for
Manitobans."
This runway project represents in excess of 50% of the airport's 2003
capital improvement budget and is funded entirely from operations at the
airport, including airport improvement fees.
Construction on Runway 18/36 will be completed as quickly and as
efficiently as possible. Winnipeg Airports Authority is working closely with
NavCanada, the airlines and the airport community to minimize area
inconvenience. During the construction period, residents of River Heights,
some East St. James and East Tuxedo may notice increased levels of activities.
Other areas including St. James, Charleswood and Tuxedo will see a
corresponding reduction in air traffic activity.

Project details: Runway 18/36 measures 11,000 feet long and 200 feet
     wide.
Materials used: Asphalt - 55,000 tonnes - equivalent to the amount of
asphalt required to pave a two lane highway between Winnipeg and Elie,
Manitoba; Lighting - includes approach lighting, center line and
     touchdown lighting, stop bars and runway guard lights - over 600 lights;
     and 100 km of cable.

The Winnipeg Airports Authority goal is to serve our region by providing
value to customers and community. A source of pride for our community, we
strive to be a leader in its growth and development.
