When I went to work in 1946 for the company that fired me (because I was too old) in 1975, they had an IBM punch card system for dealing with payroll. Paychecks were distributed on Friday, but if you were running close, you could get the check as early as Wednesday. There were three people running payroll. When IBM650 computers came out the company bought one. The payroll staff went up to eight and you couldn't get a check before Friday for love or money.
