Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong's biggest airline and Asia's fifth-largest carrier, said yesterday that it probably won't order any Airbus 380 aircraft this year because of SARS.

"The way it looks right now is unlikely," said Chief Executive David Turnbull.

Airbus was in talks with Cathay to sell as many as 10 A380s, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer John Leahy said last month. Airbus, based in Toulouse, France, is developing the 550-seat plane to break Boeing's monopoly in commercial aircraft that seat more than 400 people. Airbus has 95 firm orders for A380s, which carry a list price of $260 million and will start service in 2006.

Cathay has been forced to cut flights for a third time in less than two weeks as SARS has caused the sharpest drop in bookings in its 57-year history.
