Flight diverted on mistaken weapon report PHOENIX (AP) =97 An American Airlines 757 en route from California to New=20 York landed at Phoenix on Friday after a passenger mistakenly reported that= =20 someone on board had a knife, authorities said. American Airlines flight=20 242 was allowed to resume its trip after authorities searched two=20 passengers and determined they were not armed, said Donn Walker, a Federal= =20 Aviation Administration spokesman in Los Angeles. Another passenger had=20 pointed out the two, saying she thought they had a knife, shortly after the= =20 flight left Long Beach, Calif., Walker said. The pilot then requested=20 permission to land at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport and asked= =20 for a military escort, Walker said. Maj. Douglas Martin of the North=20 American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said NORAD monitored the=20 situation but didn't launch any fighters. After being searched, the two=20 passengers were allowed to get back on the plane, which then resumed its=20 flight to John F.
