American Air to cut management ranks DALLAS (Reuters) =97 American Airlines, trying to slash labor costs and= avoid=20 filing for bankruptcy, said Thursday it is immediately reducing its=20 management ranks by 5% and has the goal of reducing management by another=20 5% by July 1. American, a division of AMR Corp, said it has already cut 22% of its=20 management staffing since 2001. It will also immediately reduce the size of= =20 its support staff by 5% today as it moves to implement agreements to slash= =20 annual labor costs by $1.8 billion, it said. "It is critical that=20 management continues to lead our recovery," said Don Carty, American's=20 chairman and CEO.
