Boeing, US Airways issue layoff notices SEATTLE (AP) =97 The airline industry's worst-ever slump, compounded by the= =20 war in Iraq, resulted in more layoffs at Boeing's aircraft factories and=20 cuts at struggling US Airways, which planned to eliminate nearly 900 flight= =20 attendant jobs. Boeing Co. planned to issue layoff notices Friday to 1,060= =20 people as part of continuing labor cuts because of the long slump since the= =20 Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. About 1,030 notices will be issued to workers=20 in the Puget Sound region where Boeing has two commercial jet factories.=20 The cuts, which will take effect June 20, also affect workers at Boeing's=20 Bellevue-based Shared Services division, which handles such companywide=20 functions as telecommunications and travel. Layoff notices issued Feb. 14=20 will go into effect for about 840 people on Friday. With those cuts, Boeing= =20 will have eliminated 32,300 jobs since the terrorist attacks. Boeing said=20 it plans to slash a total of 35,000 jobs by the end of 2003. Meanwhile, US= =20 Airways will reduce its flight schedule and lay off 890 flight attendants=20 over the next two months as a result of cost-cutting efforts and the war in= =20 Iraq, the airline said Thursday. The cuts amount to 3% of the airline's=20 overall work force, which emerged from bankruptcy protection last month.=20 Dawn Deeks, a spokeswoman for the Association of Flight Attendants, said=20 the cuts were expected. She said that "even those people who still have=20 jobs have already taken big cuts" in pay and benefits. Unions at US Airways= =20 collectively agreed to cuts totaling more than $1 billion a year to allow=20 the company to reduce costs and emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The=20 airline now employs 29,243, down from 46,579 before Sept. 11, 2001. *************************************************** The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site/TnTisland.com Roj (Roger James) escape email mailto:ejames@xxxxxxxxx Trinbago site: www.tntisland.com Carib Brass Ctn site www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ Steel Expressions www.mts.net/~ejames/se/ Site of the Week: http://www.carstt.com TnT Webdirectory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
