IAM 141 WEBSITE April 7, 2003 District 141 Bulletin Dear Sisters and Brothers: Today, we met with United representatives to review the terms contained in the union's proposal submitted to the company on April 4, and the company's subsequent response. Key differences were resolved and progress was made toward reconciling overall cost savings attached to proposed changes to wages, work rules and benefits. We are optimistic that an agreement can be reached in time to block a pending application to dissolve any unmodified labor agreement at United. While talks continue, the District 141 Executive Board has been summoned to Chicago for a report on the status of negotiations. Members and their families should be prepared for any tentative agreement to contain sacrifices. From the moment United declared bankruptcy on December 9, a painful restructuring was inevitable. Our goal throughout has been to ensure as many jobs as possible survive the bankruptcy restructuring of United Airlines. The economic impact of war, recession and now SARS, is weighing heavily on the entire industry. Last week, Air Canada filed for bankruptcy. Airlines continue to announce layoffs, cutbacks and greater revenue shortfalls than expected. Lacking an adequate response from government officials, the situation could hardly be more grim. Every effort has been made to reach an agreement that protects our members while giving United Airlines the financial foundation to launch a successful recovery. In these unprecedented times, this becomes more difficult each day. The calls and letters of support from members across the country are deeply appreciated. This negotiating committee is determined to complete our mission here in a manner that respects the extraordinary effort members are making on the job each day. In solidarity, S.R.
