SEC sues chief of Global Airlines over fake buyout plans

NEW YORK (AP) =97 Government regulators sued the chief executive of Global=
=20
Airlines Corp. on Monday, accusing him of announcing plans to buy two major=
=20
carriers when he knew the purchases would be impossible. The lawsuit filed=20
by the Securities and Exchange Commission seeks an unspecified fine against=
=20
Emil Bernard, 50, and accuses him of violating federal securities laws.=20
Bernard could not immediately be reached for comment. The suit claims=20
Bernard announced Global's plans to buy Trans World Airlines in 2000 and US=
=20
Airways in 2001 =97 even using the fake name "John Scott" in press releases=
=20
designed to trump up the purchases. It claims Bernard knew making either=20
deal would be impossible because Global "had no assets or resources." The=20
SEC brought the lawsuit because shares of both TWA and US Airways shot up=20
after Bernard conducted interviews claiming Global was close to buying the=
=20
carriers.
