The financially troubled airline says the job cuts are not new but are scheduled retirements and layoffs from previously announced reductions in flights. Because the reductions were planned before February, when American asked pilots for $660 million in concessions, the airline says any savings from those lost jobs will not count toward the cost-cutting goal. But the Allied Pilots Association said it had been calculating the cuts it must make to meet American's demand, and wants to count the lost jobs. "American Airlines' management wants to furlough close to 1,000 pilots before turning on the calculator," a union spokesman, Gregg Overman, said. The latest clash between American and its unions comes as the airline negotiates for $1.8 billion in wage and benefit concessions from employees to help avoid a bankruptcy protection filing. Mr. Overman said the pilots' union was committed to finding its share of savings, the biggest portion from any employee group, and that its directors would vote on a plan by Monday. Union members would have 14 days to accept or reject the plan, in time for American's April 15 deadline. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/27/business/27AMR.html?ex=1049793111&ei=1&en=a97b2bc1a76dd042 HOW TO ADVERTISE --------------------------------- For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact onlinesales@xxxxxxxxxxx or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to help@xxxxxxxxxxxx Copyright 2003 The New York Times Company
