Mayor makes plea for no-fly zone over downtown Chicago CHICAGO (AP) =97 Chicago Mayor Richard Daley made a new plea Tuesday for=20 federal aviation officials to declare a no-fly zone over the city's=20 downtown area in light of the elevation of state and national terror alert= =20 levels to orange. The zone, first established after the Sept. 11 terrorist= =20 attacks, would include the 110-story Sears Tower, the nation's tallest=20 building, the city's business district and several tourist attractions. "A= =20 single-engine plane could fly from Florida all the way up here and circle=20 downtown and have a jolly time," the mayor said. "They can do it 24 hours a= =20 day, seven days a week, that is unfair to the people of Chicago." Daley's=20 office has made repeated requests to the Federal Aviation Administration,=20 the Transportation Security Administration and the federal Department of=20 Homeland Security to reinstate the no-fly zone. On Tuesday the Mayor=20 sent another request to FAA Administrator Marion Blakey and Homeland=20 Security Director Tom Ridge. A call to the FAA was not immediately returned= =20 Tuesday evening. The federal government has declared no-fly zones over New= =20 York and Washington D.C. as a result of the elevated terror alert. Daley=20 wanted to know why Chicago was not also included. Chicagoans deserve the=20 same protection as people who live and work in Washington D.C. and New=20 York," said Daley spokesman Roderick Drew. The restrictions sought by Chicago would ban small planes in the airspace=20 bound by Irving Park Road on the north, Ashland Avenue and the Kennedy=20 Expressway on the west, and the Eisenhower Expressway and Congress Parkway= =20 on the south and the Lake Michigan shoreline on the east. Chicago=20 Department of Aviation spokeswoman Monique Bond said a no-fly zone would=20 not close Meigs Field, which is an island airport in Lake Michigan=20 connected by a road to downtown. *************************************************** The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site/TnTisland.com Roj (Roger James) escape email mailto:ejames@xxxxxxxxx Trinbago site: www.tntisland.com Carib Brass Ctn site www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ Steel Expressions www.mts.net/~ejames/se/ Site of the Week: http://www.thehummingbirdonline.com TnT Webdirectory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
