Airport officials says deer pose hazard, may be shot HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) =97 Airport officials say a herd of about 11 deer= pose=20 a safety hazard to the air field and may be shot. The deer were trapped within the Hot Springs Municipal Field after the=20 Federal Aviation Administration required the airport to put up security=20 fencing on its 400 acres when vandals did about $100,000 worth of damage to= =20 the instrument landing system and other property. Airport Director George=20 Downie says workers have tried to force the deer through gates in the fence= =20 but the animals panic and run. "We've had reports of deer running in front= =20 of planes on takeoff and landing," he says, including one from a pilot who= =20 almost made a wheels-up landing because he was distracted by a deer on the= =20 runway. Tallyho Flight Training Inc. owner Bill High reported seven deer at= =20 the end of one of the runways last week while High was flying in the=20 airport traffic pattern with a student, a spokeswoman says. Downie says the= =20 Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has issued a depredation permit and=20 recommended shooting the deer. Trying to trap them usually scares them, and= =20 the deer often injure themselves and have to be destroyed, officials say.=20 Commission wildlife officers have baited a site on the field and three=20 police officer have volunteered to shoot the deer, Downie says. City=20 Manager Kent Myers is to make the final decision. Tranquilizing the deer=20 also is being considered, Downie says. "We have some of the latest, hi-tech= =20 tranquilizer equipment available but after hitting the deer, it would be=20 three to five minutes before the drug took effect so it (the deer) could=20 travel a long way," city Animal Services Supervisor Dan Bugg says. *************************************************** The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site/TnTisland.com Roj (Roger James) escape email mailto:ejames@xxxxxxxxx Trinbago site: www.tntisland.com Carib Brass Ctn site www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ Steel Expressions www.mts.net/~ejames/se/ Site of the Week: http://www.tha.gov.tt/ TnT Webdirectory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
