Dozens of indicted Denver airport workers remain at large, prosecutors'=20
data shows

DENVER (AP) =97 More than half the workers indicted last year for using fake=
=20
Social Security numbers to get jobs at Denver International Airport were=20
never arrested, and none went to jail, according to data from the U.S.=20
attorney's office. The prosecutors' data showed that 67 people remained=20
at-large among the 110 who were indicted in September, spokesman Jeffrey=20
Dorschner said. U.S. Attorney John Suthers said most of the missing=20
suspects are illegal aliens who have returned to Mexico or have gotten jobs=
=20
that don't require security clearance, and there was no indication that any=
=20
of them was a threat.
"We know they are not working at the airport," Suthers said. The airport=20
was among dozens nationwide where workers came under review. None of the=20
Denver workers was believed to have terrorist intentions, but officials=20
were concerned that people using phony IDs had access to restricted areas.=
=20
Those indicted included airport employees, airline workers, contract=20
workers and employees of businesses at the airport. About a third were=20
arrested in a raid by federal agents as part of Operation Safe Sky.=20
Thirty-three pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of accessing a secure=20
place. Scott Weber, interim director of the new Bureau of Immigration and=20
Customs Enforcement in Colorado, said two of the 33 were deported and 10=20
others agreed to return to their native countries. Nineteen cases are=20
pending, one person failed to appear for a hearing and a federal magistrate=
=20
dismissed another case, Weber said. Eight other cases were dismissed,=20
including that of United Airlines pilot Joseph Raulins.
Dorschner said Raulins was "the subject of an ongoing investigation."=20
Raulins' attorney, Craig Truman, said the charges were dismissed because=20
the government couldn't make a case against him. Raulins is now retired,=20
United spokesman Chris Braithwaite said.
