National Airlines wants to sell license to Alaska cargo carrier
LAS VEGAS (AP) =97 Defunct National Airlines wants to sell its few assets to=

an Alaskan air cargo company for a Nevada-based niche charter air=20
operation. The deal would allow Northern Air Cargo of Anchorage, Alaska, to=
=20
fly larger planes on two round-trip freight and passenger charters a week=20
between Houston and Magadan, Russia, via Anchorage. The charters would be=20
operated under an exclusive contract with a U.S. oil corporation that=20
National and Northern Air representatives refused to identify Thursday in=20
U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Las Vegas. Northern Air Cargo has operated since=20
1956 and once flew a DC-6 aircraft originally owned by Howard Hughes. Las=20
Vegas-based National ceased operations on Nov. 6, after spending almost two=
=20
years of its 3{ years in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. National lawyers=
=20
argued Thursday against U.S. Trustee Barry Jenkins' efforts to move the=20
airline from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7 bankruptcy trusteeship and=20
liquidation. Judge Linda Riegle decided instead to appoint a Chapter 11=20
trustee, and ordered National representatives to return March 12 with a=20
buyer for the airline's most valuable assets =97 including its Federal=20
Aviation Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation operating=20
certificates, operating manuals and the National Airlines trademark.=20
National President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Conway and Northern Air=
=20
Cargo President and Chief Operating Officer William Dix Fowler said in a=20
letter that the cargo company would acquire National's assets for $350,000=
=20
and form a joint venture called Northern National LLC. The charter company=
=20
would be based in Las Vegas and would begin operations this summer, when=20
the oil company begins oil and gas explorations in the Russian Far East.
