United Union Offers Plan to Save $1 Billion February 27, 2003 By REUTERS CHICAGO, Feb. 26 (Reuters) - The flight attendants union at United Airlines said today that it had offered to take pay cuts and other measures that would save the airline more than $1 billion over the next six years. The group of 24,000 workers, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants, said the savings would help United compete with discount airlines like Southwest Airlines and Continental Airlines without sacrificing "premium" service. Earlier this month United, which is a unit of the UAL Corporation, asked unions for $2.56 billion in annual cost cuts. The flight attendants union said its proposal also included work rule and scheduling modifications intended to increase productivity. United, which filed for bankruptcy protection in December, is also trying to reduce its fleet of 567 planes. The airline said today that it had agreed to sell 7 of its 44 Boeing 747-400's to Thai Airways International. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/02/27/business/27UAL.html?ex=1047356360&ei=1&en=0ca967dbd4331565 HOW TO ADVERTISE --------------------------------- For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact onlinesales@nytimes.com or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to help@nytimes.com.
