Northwest, in Switch, Raises Fares by $10 February 21, 2003 By REUTERS MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 20 (Reuters) - Northwest Airlines said today that it would impose a $10 each-way fuel surcharge on its published discount fares, a week after it failed to match rate increases by rivals. Earlier in the day, Continental Airlines cited higher fuel costs in raising fares by the same amount on tickets to and from its hubs at Houston, Cleveland and Newark. Continental started last week's unsuccessful bid to pass on higher fuel costs to travelers. Northwest said the increase applied to discounted business fares and all leisure fares, domestic and international, but would not apply to full coach, business class and first-class walk-up fares or to domestic three-day advance purchase fares. Representatives for American, United and Delta Air Lines said they were reviewing the latest increase. Last week, other major airlines could not sustain a fare increase after Northwest opted not to match the higher fares. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/02/21/business/21AIR.html?ex=1046847539&ei=1&en=fb0be4a8a7af3c5e HOW TO ADVERTISE --------------------------------- For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact onlinesales@nytimes.com or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to help@nytimes.com.
