Air Canada Reports January Traffic MONTREAL, Feb. 11 /CNW Telbec/ - Air Canada mainline flew 2.1 per cent fewer revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in January 2003 than in January 2002, according to preliminary traffic figures. Capacity increased by 1.6 per cent, resulting in a load factor of 70.4 per cent, compared to 73.0 per cent in January 2002; a decrease of 2.6 percentage points. Jazz, Air Canada's regional airline subsidiary, flew 9.9 per cent greater revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in January 2003 than in January 2002, according to preliminary traffic figures. Capacity increased by 2.7 per cent, resulting in a load factor of 53.7 per cent, compared to 50.2 per cent in January 2002; an increase of 3.5 percentage points. "Our North American traffic results continued to be negatively impacted by increased capacity from low-fare domestic carriers, U.S. regional airlines and from hubs of mainline U.S. carriers", said Rob Peterson, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. "While U.S. transborder traffic rose 0.8 per cent at the mainline, the schedule for January also reflected increased transborder flying by our regional carrier, Jazz. On a combined basis, U.S. transborder traffic increased 2.1 per cent on an improved eastern Seaboard and Florida performance partially offset by the suspension of service from Vancouver to Boston and Washington, and a softer California market. Traffic on the China and Japan services continued to expand rapidly and offset the impact of the suspension of our Vancouver-Taipei route," said Mr. Peterson. This discussion contains certain forward-looking statements, which involve a number of risks and uncertainties. As a result of many factors including acts or potential acts of terrorism, government regulations and government mandated restrictions on operations and pricing, fuel prices, industry restructuring, labour negotiations, the economic environment in general including foreign exchange and interest rates, the airline competitive and pricing environment, industry capacity decisions and new entrants as well as external events, actual results could differ from expected results and the differences could be material. << _________________________________________________________________________ AIR CANADA MAINLINE (Includes Tango, Zip & Jetz) _________________________________________________________________________ JANUARY YEAR-TO-DATE _________________________________________________________________________ 2003 2002 Change 2003 2002 Change _________________________________________________________________________ Traffic (RPMs millions) 3,174 3,241 -2.1% 3,174 3,241 -2.1% _________________________________________________________________________ Capacity (ASMs millions) 4,506 4,437 +1.6% 4,506 4,437 +1.6% _________________________________________________________________________ Load Factor 70.4% 73.0% -2.6pts 70.4% 73.0% -2.6pts _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ Canada RPMs 870 996 -12.7% 870 996 -12.7% _________________________________________________________________________ ASMs 1,292 1,337 -3.4% 1,292 1,337 -3.4% _________________________________________________________________________ Load Factor 67.3% 74.5% -7.2pts 67.3% 74.5% -7.2pts _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ U.S. Trans- border RPMs 715 709 +0.8% 715 709 +0.8% _________________________________________________________________________ ASMs 1,114 1,090 +2.2% 1,114 1,090 +2.2% _________________________________________________________________________ Load Factor 64.2% 65.0% -0.8pts 64.2% 65.0% -0.8pts _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ Atlantic RPMs 720 713 +1.0% 720 713 +1.0% _________________________________________________________________________ ASMs 982 955 +2.8% 982 955 +2.8% _________________________________________________________________________ Load Factor 73.3% 74.7% -1.4pts 73.3% 74.7% -1.4pts _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ Pacific RPMs 528 528 0.0% 528 528 0.0% _________________________________________________________________________ ASMs 680 654 +4.0% 680 654 +4.0% _________________________________________________________________________ Load Factor 77.6% 80.7% -3.1pts 77.6% 80.7% -3.1pts _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ Other & Charter RPMs 341 295 +15.6% 341 295 +15.6% _________________________________________________________________________ ASMs 438 401 +9.2% 438 401 +9.2% _________________________________________________________________________ Load Factor 77.9% 73.6% +4.3pts 77.9% 73.6% +4.3pts _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ AIR CANADA REGIONAL (Jazz) _________________________________________________________________________ JANUARY YEAR-TO-DATE _________________________________________________________________________ 2003 2002 Change 2003 2002 Change _________________________________________________________________________ Traffic (RPMs millions) 122 111 +9.9% 122 111 +9.9% _________________________________________________________________________ Capacity (ASMs millions) 227 221 +2.7% 227 221 +2.8% _________________________________________________________________________ Load Factor 53.7% 50.2% +3.5pts 53.7% 50.2% +3.5pts _________________________________________________________________________ *************************************************** The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site/TnTisland.com Roj (Roger James) escape email mailto:ejames@escape.ca Trinbago site: www.tntisland.com Carib Brass Ctn site www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ Steel Expressions www.mts.net/~ejames/se/ Site of the Week: http://www.boogsie.com/ TnT Webdirectory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
