Boeing announces working name, execs to lead new jet

SEATTLE (AP) =97 Boeing on Wednesday named the top executives who will lead=
=20
development of its new super-efficient jet, called, for now, the 7E7. The=20
twin-aisle 7E7 jet =97 E stands for efficiency, said spokesman Tom Brabant =
=97=20
will seat between 200 and 250 passengers and have a range of between 8,000=
=20
and 9,200 miles. Boeing Commercial Airplanes Chief Executive Alan Mulally=20
said in December the company would build the more conventional 767-sized=20
jet, instead of its much-touted, futuristic Sonic Cruiser plane, which=20
would have traveled near the speed of sound. Cash-strapped airlines=20
consulted by Boeing were more interested in the fuel-efficient model,=20
Boeing said. Boeing expects to begin offering the plane to customers in=20
2004, with the first jet being put in service in 2008. Boeing tapped=20
Michael B. Bair, 46, as the senior vice president of the Boeing 7E7=20
program. Bair, who will report directly to Mulally, previously led the=20
company's Commercial Aviation Services business which works with airline=20
customers for maintenance, training and other support services.

Walter B. Gillette, 61, will lead the engineering, manufacturing and other=
=20
development aspects of the project. Gillette, a longtime engineer who has=20
worked on every new Boeing commercial jet model, most recently spearheaded=
=20
the Sonic Cruiser project.
John N. Feren, 47, will lead sales and marketing of the new jet. He most=20
recently was the company's vice president of sales for airlines of the=20
Americas and leasing companies worldwide. Craig A. Saddler, 43, will lead=20
finance and business operations. Saddler was chief financial officer of=20
Boeing's Shared Services Group. In addition, Boeing said Michael J. Cave,=20
42, Boeing Commercial's chief financial officer, will replace Bair in the=20
Commercial Aviation Services department. Robert J. Pasterick, 47, will=20
replace Cave.
