Union wants BWIA back in State hands BY JUHEL BROWNE Trinidad Guardian Privatisation for BWIA has clearly failed and it is time for the State to regain full ownership of the nation's flag carrier, said the Aviation Communication Allied Workers Union. "Government should re-nationalise the airline. BWIA is too important a national development to leave it in the hands of the private sector," said ACAWU president Christopher Abraham. Interviewed yesterday, Abraham said the representative action filed against BWIA last December was a sign of the failure of airline's existing management structure. "The shareholders have indicated the concerns being raised by the union all the time," he said. However, Abraham said Government has misrepresented taxpayer's stake in BWIA and should become more involved in its affairs. On Wednesday, Valley said the State which owns 33.5 per cent of BWIA is "a minor investor" in the airline. Abraham said this was not so. "They are the single largest shareholder." He called on Government to develop a national policy on civil aviation in Trinidad and Tobago and place BWIA under one Ministry to improve its management. "BWIA has the capacity to be self-sufficient if it is properly organised. BWIA is under about five different ministries. It has to be centralised, he said. *************************************************** The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site/TnTisland.com Roj (Roger James) escape email mailto:ejames@escape.ca Trinbago site: www.tntisland.com Carib Brass Ctn site www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ Steel Expressions www.mts.net/~ejames/se/ Site of the Week: http://www.atlanticlng.com TnT Webdirectory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
