QUITO, Ecuador -- An Ecuadorean airliner carrying 60 passengers slid off the end of
the runway on takeoff Friday from Quito's airport, apparently after a tire blew out.
Two passengers were reported to have suffered minor injuries.

Authorities shut Quito's international airport until the TAME Fokker airliner could
be removed from its resting place 20 yards beyond the runway where its nose was
pushed into the ground.

The plane was headed to Cali, Colombia, with a stop in the Ecuadorean city of Tulcan
on the border with Colombia.

The crew opened emergency doors on the plane and passengers jumped to the ground, Red
Cross spokesman Cristian Rivera said. He said two Colombian women injured their
ankles when they jumped and also suffered skin irritation when fuel spilled on them.
He said they were taken to a clinic for treatment.

Quito airport chief Jose Andrade said airport technicians were investigating reports
that one of the plane's tires blew as it sped down the runway.
