New tower at Newark to expand controllers' field of vision Midday update from the Asbury Park Press=20 NEWARK (AP) -- The third tower in Newark Liberty International Airport's history will provide air traffic controllers a clearer view of planes taking off and landing when the 325-foot structure opens sometime in May.=20 Built by the Federal Aviation Administration, the $22.4 million tower will be nation's second tallest -- 20 feet shorter than Florida's Orlando International Airport -- and will provide controllers unobscured views of the airport's three runways.=20 The 850-square-foot facility will also enable the airport to add at least two controllers to a shift to divide up the crucial duties of clearing planes for takeoff and landing and guiding planes to and from runways.=20 Newark Liberty is one of the nation's busiest airport's, handling 120 takeoffs and landings per hour. The extra staff is expected to reduce delays, which have been less of a problem since the 2001 terrorist attack and diminished air travel.=20 =A9 copyright 2003 The Associated <http://www.injersey.com/apnotice> Press
