American turns to workers
By Dan Reed, USA TODAY

American Airlines' management is seeking weekly meetings with its three
unions and representatives of non-union workers to work on "finding
solutions to the airline's continuing financial crisis." CEO Don Carty and
President Gerard Arpey said in a letter released Thursday, "There is no
time to waste. In short, we are losing millions of dollars every day, which
has forced us to borrow vast sums of money just to meet payroll and stay in
business." The company has identified $2 billion in annual savings but says
it needs to find ways to cut $2 billion more to break even. American parent
AMR lost $3 billion in the first nine months of 2002, and $1.8 billion in
2001. The company is expected to report a fourth-quarter loss Wednesday of
about $600 million, excluding one-time items.
