Daschle says South Dakota airport should not bear his name ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) =97 A new airport terminal isn't likely to bear the name= =20 of native son Sen. Tom Daschle as some have suggested. In a letter to the=20 board of the Aberdeen Regional Airport Daschle said the late Gen. LaVerne=20 Saunders is more deserving. The airport itself is already called Saunders=20 Field. "While I am deeply honored ... I want the board to know how strongly= =20 I believe that the Aberdeen airport, including its new terminal, should=20 continue to bear the Saunders name," Daschle wrote. Saunders was an Air=20 Force fighter pilot during World War II. His many combat honors include the= =20 Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver= =20 Star and Purple Heart. Daschle helped secured $2.5 million in federal funds= =20 for the $6.6 million terminal building that should be finished later this=20 year. That, along with Daschle's congressional and military service, led=20 some members of the airport board to suggest naming the terminal after him. But it also caused a stir among those who are not fans of the Senate's=20 Democratic leader. "Naming the entire facility after Gen. Sanders is a=20 fitting tribute to this World War II flying ace of whom we are so proud,=20 and I want to be counted among South Dakota's many veterans who are urging= =20 you to bestow this honor on him." *************************************************** The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site/TnTisland.com Roj (Roger James) : escape email mailto:ejames@escape.ca Trinbago site: www.tntisland.com Carib Brass Ctn site www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ Steel Expressions www.mts.net/~ejames/se/ Site of the Week: http://www.hilofoodstores.com TnT Webdirectory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
