Delta tinkers with standby policies

While other airlines have scrapped plans to tack on extra charges for=20
standby travel, Delta seems intent to make its fees stick. A week after=20
American, Continental and United dropped plans for a $100 standby=20
surcharge, Delta said it will change =97 but not abandon =97 its plans to=20
charge fliers wanting to switch to another flight. Delta will eliminate=20
standby travel by requiring passengers to confirm a seat on another flight=
=20
if change their plans for same-day travel. Delta will impose a $25 charge=20
for new flights within three hours of the customer's originally scheduled=20
flight, though changes to a flight departing more than three hours from the=
=20
traveler's original flight will carry a $100 fee, plus any fare difference.=
=20
The company said it would waive the fee for platinum and gold members of=20
Delta's SkyMiles program. The change, which takes effect March 1, is=20
designed to push business travelers into buying more expensive tickets =97=
=20
which come with the option of changing. "I think these guys are just=20
yanking their customers around so much," Kevin Mitchell, chairman of the=20
Business Travelers Coalition, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It's=
=20
enough to affect demand." USA TODAY/AP
