Workers at Sarasota airport to receive tuberculosis testing SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) =97 All airline employees and skycaps at=20 Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport will be tested for tuberculosis=20 Monday, after two workers tested positive in recent weeks for the highly=20 contagious illness, officials said. One of those workers died within the=20 past month, said airport president Fredrick Piccolo, but it's unknown if=20 tuberculosis was the cause of that man's death. Piccolo said the second=20 tuberculosis case involving an airport worker, a skycap, was confirmed=20 Friday. The airport has not announced the identity of the other infected=20 worker, or where that person worked before he died. Sarasota-Manatee Airport Authority board member Bob Waechter said Sunday=20 that there is no need for public alarm. "Tuberculosis takes consistent, prolonged contact to pass along to another= =20 person," Waechter said. Tuberculosis often affects the respiratory system, although it can also=20 affect the intestines, bones, joints, skin and nervous system. About 1.2=20 million passengers have traveled through the airport so far this year,=20 according to statistics released by airport officials. The airport is=20 served by six major air carriers =97 Continental, Delta, Northwest, US=20 Airways, Air France and Alitalia =97 along with several commuter airlines.= =20 The airport has not let travelers know about the tuberculosis cases,=20 Piccolo said. "It's a department of health issue, not an airport issue,"=20 Piccolo said. Officials from Florida's Department of Health were not=20 available for comment early Monday.
