BWIA concerned By SHARON LYM T'dad Guardian 12.09.02 BWIA is concerned about the impending bankruptcy of United Airlines, BWIA's corporate communication director Clint Williams said yesterday. "It (the bankruptcy) could impact negatively on the airline's domestic/US route" he said. Willams said if United is placed in the hands of receivers, destinations may change which may mean the number of flights may be cut back. BWIA and United formed an alliance in July 2000 in order to complement each others' operations. The alliance allows BWIA to increase its presence in North America, as United Airlines has a strong foothold in the US. United in turn could extend its reach into the Caribbean, as BWIA is the largest carrier in the Caribbean. However, Williams said since T&T was downgraded to Category Two status by the US Federal Aviation Administration, the airline has only had limited code sharing with UAL. "We have not been able to take full advantage of the code sharing, causing us to lose approximately US$900,000 in potential revenue," he said. The downgrade prevents BWIA from opening new routes or acquiring new aircraft for use in the United States. This meant BWIA's plans to fly to Atlanta through its code-sharing with United Airlines had to be deferred. For now, Willams said BWIA will be keeping a close eye on all new developments involving United. Meanwhile, he said BWIA is seeking alliances with other airlines.
