Britain firefighters and security guard plans airport strikes LONDON (AP) =97 The union that represents firefighters and security guards= at=20 British airports plans a series of one-day strikes that could disrupt=20 travel during the winter holidays. If the strikes go on as planned,=20 London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports and five others would not be able to= =20 operate on the six strike days in November, December and January, said Tim= =20 Lyle, national officer for the Transport and General Workers Union. BAA=20 PLC, which runs airports around Britain, said it was considering=20 contingency measures to allow operations to continue if workers walk off=20 the job. Union members approved the strikes to protest a contract offer from BAA.=20 Workers see the wage offer as inadequate given increased workloads=20 following the Sept. 11 attacks. The union says the wage increase in the=20 contract offer amounts to 1.7%, but BAA officials said it was worth 6.3%=20 over two years. Lyle said he still hoped the strikes could be averted if=20 the company improved its offer. The strike dates are Nov. 28, Dec. 2, 10,=20 15 and 23 and Jan. 2; the other airports are Stansted, Southampton,=20 Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh The owner of Roger's Trinbago Site: Roj (Roger James) *************************************************** escape email mailto:ejames@escape.ca Trinbago site: http://www.tntisland.com CBC Website http://www.tntisland.com/caribbeanbrassconnection/ The Trinbago Site of the Week: (I95.5FM) http://www.i955fm.com (Radio Station I95.5FM) courtesy of Roj Trinbago Website & TnT Web Directory Roj's Trinbago Website: http://www.tntisland.com TnT Web Directory: http://search.co.tt *********************************************************
