BWIA says staff getting on board
T'dad Guardian

Employees of BWIA are giving their employers suggestions on how the airline
can save money as a show of solidarity the airline said in a press release
yesterday. BWIA said as a result, its management remains confident that all
of those involved in meeting its October 31 deadline to come up with a
viable restructuring plan will meet the challenge. "During a recent
'Teleday' where staff had access to dedicated phone lines to speak
one-on-one with president and chief executive officer, Conrad Aleong, many
used the opportunity to suggest cost-saving measures and to make personal
pledges of sacrifices to save the airline," BWIA said. The release also
said staff have been registering their commitment and cost-saving ideas to
management online.

BWIA said union representatives have been meeting with management and will
present concession packages to their member ship for voting. Contacted
yesterday, Christopher Abraham, president of the Aviation Communications
and Allied Workers Union, said he was heading for a meeting and could not
comment at that time. BWIA quoted its chief financial officer, Paul Schutz,
lauding the airline's staff in their involvement in its cost cutting
programme a success.
"The response has been tremendous. Ideas are coming in from all departments
and the mood of the staff is very encouraging. With the initiatives being
actively considered, we are starting to see the light at the end of the
tunnel," Schutz said. BWIA also updated its operational status: "The
Airline continues servicing its routes, and bookings, while still below
average, continue to come in as travellers plan their winter travel trips,"
the release stated.
