You can work for the airport operator. For instance, Janis Kong, LHR's
managing director, has been with BAA for 28 years, starting as a
clerical assistant at Edinburgh airport. She held a variety of posts
at EDI before switching to Glasgow and the retail side of the
operation. She then went to LHR T4 operations, then LGW operations,
was appointed LGW MD and is back at LHR. What's increasingly important
at airports is an understanding of both operations and retail, and
Kong has both.

Another way is to work for an airline. Anyone who has made it to
checkin manager would probably have some good skills that an airport
needs.
