BWIA, pilots in retrenchment talks Trinidad Express The BWIA board is due to meet with the airline's pilots today in what is likely to be a stormy meeting at the Crowne Plaza as the pilots fight to stave off the threat of retrenchment that hangs over 26 of them. The meeting is meant to bring pilots up-to-date on developments at the airline. It comes one day after BWIA chairman Lawrence Duprey warned that the airline faces bankruptcy if outmoded labour contracts are not amended by the end of October. Representatives of the Trinidad Airline Pilots Association (Talpa) were in a series of meetings yesterday but Christopher Abraham, the president general of the Aviation Communication and Allied Workers Union, said: "They have failed miserably managing the airline. September 11 is just being used as an excuse." In a paid advertisement, Duprey said BWIA "can no longer carry its outdated labour terms and conditions, poor productivity, absence of cross-utilisation of staff and full in-house capabilities." According to Duprey: "Unless its employees cooperate, BWIA will have no alternative, as a publicly-listed company, but to cease trading as required by law and to place itself in the hands of its creditors."
