Airlines expect half-empty flights by Orion Ganase American Airlines and BWIA are both expecting a lot of half-empty flights today, the first anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. "People are very aware of the date," said Clint Williams, BWIA's director of corporate communications. As the United States went on full alert yesterday ahead of sombre ceremonies to mark the anniversary, several airlines are predicting a "light day" today, with passengers at an all-time low. American Airlines also expects to have a slow day. Spokesperson Tara Baten told the Express that the airline has experienced a marked decline in reservations since August. The reduction in reservations has resulted in the airline reducing flights globally. Baten said that to describe today, September 11, as "a light day" would be a bit of an understatement. ALM, which has just one flight coming into Trinidad today, expects a normal day. The flight is roughly 80 per cent full and the airline reported that things were normal. Meanwhile, to mark the anniversary of the attacks there are several memorial services scheduled today. The American Embassy will be hosting a ceremony to honour the victims of September 11 at the Chaguaramas Military History and Aerospace Museum. At the Memorial Centre in Trincity, Lifetime Promotions Ltd will be remembering the Trinidad and Tobago nationals who died in the disaster. And, BWIA will be holding a remembrance for those who died and a thanksgiving service for the survivors at the airport atrium.
