Jobs to go as BWIA cuts cost By Curtis Rampersad Trinidad Express National airline BWIA will this week launch a massive restructuring exercise to help stem huge financial losses for the past six months. The exercise will include job cuts over all levels of the company. Following a board meeting last Friday directors took the decision to slash costs and called on management to look at immediate restructuring. Clint Williams, director of corporate communications, said yesterday the board instructed management that they find ways "to revise and restructure the airline to reflect its grim financial position and the apparent changed industry since September 11". Williams said the potentially lucrative summer season had already been lost and it was based on this the restructuring exercise was deemed necessary. Declining travel since the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States saw BWIA losing US$8.4 million in first six months of this year and an on-going dispute between pilots and management has cost the airline TT$8 million in loss revenue since July to first four days of this month. Several flights to Tobago, up the Caribbean and Toronto were cancelled over the weekend.
