Delta in code-share talks with Continental, Northwest -WSJ

) and Northwest Airlines (NWAC

) about a code-share agreement, the Wall Street Journal said on
Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The talks are in response to a recent pact between United Airlines (UAL
<http://money.excite.com/jsp/qt/full.jsp?time=0&symbol_search_text=UAL>
) and US Airways (U
<http://money.excite.com/jsp/qt/full.jsp?time=0&symbol_search_text=U>
),the sources said, though it was uncertain if the discussions would
reach a conclusion, or if regulators would approve such a plan.
Continental and Northwest already have a code-share alliance and the
current talks aim to woo in Delta, the paper said.
The carriers are also discussing the possibility of expanding the pact
to a broader international partnership, including Air France. Delta and
Air France are already linked in Skyteam, a six-carrier international
code-share alliance.
In a code-share agreement, airlines sell seats on one another's flights,
so allowing them to extend their competitive reach without the aircraft
and manpower required to expand individually.
